September automaker recalls overview:

  • Who: Automakers Ford, Tesla, Nissan, Toyota, GM and Porsche initiated recalls last month.
  • Why: The automakers announced recalls over concerns related to vehicle safety and defective parts.
  • Where: The recalls are nationwide.

Several automakers announced recalls in September over concerns related to safety and defective parts, among other things.

Auto recalls occur when an automaker or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determines that something about the vehicle presents an unreasonable safety risk or fails to reach minimum safety standards.

Automaker recalls in September were in regard to concerns over defective window systems, transmission parking pawls, headlights, parking brakes, hood latches and rearview camera lenses.

Tesla recalls nearly 1.1 million vehicles over concerns windows could pinch fingers

Last month, Tesla initiated a recall for almost 1.1 million of its vehicles over concerns it manufactured them with power window automatic reversal systems that may not correctly react in the event of an obstruction

The car manufacturer said it is concerned that the window systems’ inability to react to obstructions could cause the windows to exert excessive force on fingers before retracting.

Tesla’s recall included some of its model year 2017-2022 Model 3, 2020-2021 Model Y and 2021-2022 Model X and Model S vehicles.

Tesla informed the drivers of the recalled vehicles that they should expect to see an update alert on their screens and apps, with the company saying it would fix the issue via a software update.

Nissan recalls more than 200,000 pickup trucks over rollaway concerns

Nissan announced a recall of more than 200,000 of its model year 2020-2023 Nissan Frontier and Titan pickup trucks last month over concerns the vehicles could roll away while in park

In a recall notice issued by the NHTSA, the agency says that the recalled Nissan pickup trucks could roll away due to their transmission parking pawls potentially not engaging while the vehicles are parked.

“If the parking pawl does not engage, an affected vehicle may move after placing the shifter into ‘Park,’” the Nissan recall states.

Nissan, which says it has received no reports of injuries connected to the recall, advised drivers of the recalled vehicles to use their parking brakes when they park their cars to prevent them from potentially rolling away.

Porsche recalls vehicles over headlight adjustment concerns

Also last month, Porsche initiated a recall for more than 193,000 of its model year 2003-2020 Macan, Panamera, Cayenne and Cayman S vehicles over concerns the company improperly adjusted the headlights.

Porsche said the adjustment issue could create a crash risk by causing the headlights to not properly illuminate the road and cause oncoming drivers to experience a glare.

The automaker clarified in its recall notice that it did not expect the issue to affect many of its customers. However, it acknowledges that “someone could inadvertently adjust the lower beam horizontal adjustment mechanism to an improper setting.”

Porsche says it will have its dealers inspect the vehicles’ headlights to see if they are missing sealing caps, which causes the issue, at no cost to drivers.

Defect in some 2022 Toyota Tundra, Lexus vehicles’ electronic parking brake leads to recall

Toyota announced it recalled some of its model year 2022 Tundra and Lexus NX250 and NX2350 vehicles over concerns that they may contain defective electronic parking brakes, presenting a rollaway risk.

The automaker initiated the recall after discovering it may have outfitted the vehicles’ Brake Actuator Assembly with Skid Control ECUs that incorrectly detect overcurrents from the Electronic Parking Brake Actuator.

Toyota, which is attempting to remedy the issue by reprogramming affected vehicles’ Skid Control ECUs, says the problem prevents the recalled vehicles from complying with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

General Motors recalls Chevrolet Spark vehicles over corroding secondary hood latches

Also in September, General Motors recalled more than 120,000 model year 2013-2015 Chevrolet Spark vehicles and 2014-2015 Chevrolet Spark EVs over concerns that the secondary hood latch on the cars can corrode

GM says a secondary hood latch that becomes corroded can cause the hood of the vehicle to open unexpectedly, increasing the risk of an accident.

“If the striker becomes stuck out of position and both the primary and secondary hood latch fail to engage, the vehicle’s hood may open unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash,” the GM recall states.

GM says the hood latch issue is caused by insufficient protective coating on the hood striker assemblies, including the secondary lid levers, to prevent severe corrosion.

Ford initiates recall over concerns rearview cameras have clouded lenses

Ford also initiated a recall last month for some of its model year 2017-2020 F-Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450 and 2017-2020 Lincoln Continental vehicles.

It initiated the recall over concerns that the vehicles may have reduced rear visibility due to potentially being outfitted with rearview cameras with cloudy lenses.

“Lack of a clear rear view camera image can reduce the driver’s visibility of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash,” the Ford recall states.

Ford says it introduced the recalled rearview cameras into production in November 2015 and later took them out of production in March 2020.
