Chevy Spark recall overview:

  • Who: General Motors is recalling more than 120,000 Chevrolet Spark vehicles.
  • Why: The secondary hood latch may corrode, causing a safety issue.
  • Where: The Chevrolet Spark recall is active in the United States.

General Motors (GM) is recalling more than 120,000 model year 2013-2015 Chevrolet Spark vehicles and 2014-2015 Chevrolet Spark EVs due to potential corrosion of the secondary hood latch.

A hood latch failure can result in the vehicle’s hood opening unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash, the company says.

The recall, issued Aug. 25 on the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) website, expands a similar recall from 2014.

In the latest recall, GM says the secondary hood latch lever in the affected vehicles may prematurely corrode at the pivot.

“If severely corroded, the secondary latch striker may become stuck out of position and fail to properly engage.

“If the striker becomes stuck out of position and both the primary and secondary hood latch fail to engage, the vehicle’s hood may open unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.”

After an investigation, the company determined that the protective coating applied by the supplier to the hood striker assemblies, which include the secondary latch lever, was insufficient to prevent severe corrosion.

GM to replace hood striker assembly free of charge

There are a potential 120,688 vehicles affected in the latest recall. About 116,223 are gasoline-powered Chevrolet Spark vehicles, and 4,465 are Chevrolet Spark EVs.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

GM said dealers will replace the hood striker assembly and hood latch assembly, free of charge.

Letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed Oct. 10, 2022.

In 2020, Judge Dora Lizette Irizarry decided to dismiss a General Motors class action claiming Chevy Malibu vehicles have an engine defect that causes them to reduce power abruptly.

  1. Robert Landsbach says:

    I have a 2013 Chevy Spark.
In 2014 there was a recall for the hood latch. It was repaired in December 2014. We purchased the automobile in July 2020.
In August 2022, a recall was announced for the exact same thing. For 8 months, I called Chevy to have it repaired. I also reported to Chevy in March 2023, that I was driving and the hood started to shake. I was able to pull over and make sure it was closed tightly again. After many more calls to Chevy, on 6/2/23, my daughter was driving on the PA turnpike going approx 65 mph when the hood opened smashing the window. Luckily she was a get to get to the shoulder and have the automobile towed to our home. We towed it to a Chevy dealer on 6/25/23. It has been sitting there since with a broken windshield.
Water damage / radio / charger input (cigarette lighter) / possibly the AC. We have contacted Chevy repeatedly. Finally we were contacted on 7/25/23 and advised that claim was declined. I was Advised that the car was in 2 prior accidents that would have caused this not the recall ?? Chevy continues to ignore my messages or to advise me of the dates of accidents or provide me with the accident reports of what damage was done. Beyond frustrating. This was a recall of a recall. I contacted them for 8 months before the accident and 2 months since the accident only for Chevy to decline the claim. Please Help

  2. Mrs. Buckley says:

I recently got into a really bad car accidents due to this recall and the crazy part about it is that I took the car to the chevy dealership to get fixed and they did not fix it instead they pointed out multiple issues with the car fixed those and then never told me that the issue did not have a remedy for the recall. Now my car is none drivable and I sustained injures from the accident it cause thankfully I have my life.

  3. Justin antonius says:

I’m not sure where you guys got information saying Chevy would replace this but I have two of these Chevy Sparks I use on turo and I cannot rent them out because Chevy says they have no solution to fix the problem

    1. KeyKey says:

Same here with me. It’s sucks because this car was my money maker. I’m continuously losing money because of this recall and Chevy don’t know when they will have a resolution for the problem. GM told me that we can have a 3rd party fix the issue but turo only accepts the work being fixed by the dealer. Where do we go from here? It has been months
