Tift Regional Health System Inc. and Southwell Inc. agreed to a $1.2 million class action settlement to resolve claims that they failed to prevent a 2022 data breach that compromised patient information.

The Tift Regional Health System settlement benefits individuals whose private information may have been compromised in the August 2022 Tift Regional Health System data breach.

Tift Regional Health System, a Georgia hospital system, was reportedly targeted in a ransomware attack in August 2022. According to allegations in the class action lawsuit resolved by the settlement, Tift failed to prevent the data breach through reasonable cybersecurity measures, including basic protections, such as multifactor authentication and endpoint detection.

Plaintiffs in the case say they suffered damages as a result of the data breach, including the risk of identity theft and fraud.

Tift Regional Health System has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to resolve these allegations with a $1.2 million class action settlement.

Under the terms of the Tift Regional Health System settlement, class members can receive a cash payment and credit monitoring services.

Class members who experienced documented losses as a result of the Tift Regional Health System data breach can receive up to $5,000 in reimbursement. This reimbursement covers expenses such as identity theft, fraud, credit-related costs, ID replacement, bank contact postage and more. Class members must provide documentation of these expenses to receive reimbursement.

Class members who did not experience documented losses can receive a pro rata cash payment. These payments will vary depending on the number of claims filed but are estimated to be around $75. No documentation is required to claim these payments.

All class members are eligible for two years of free credit monitoring services. This service includes $1 million in medical identity theft insurance, monitoring for healthcare insurance ID exposure, medical record number exposure and unauthorized Health Savings Account spending.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Sept. 15, 2026.

The final approval hearing for the Tift Regional Health System settlement is scheduled for Sept. 14, 2026.

To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Oct. 15, 2026.
