Ford recalls 148K Mustangs due to potential power loss

Ford is recalling more than 148,000 Mustang vehicles due to a defect that may cause a loss of power.

The recall, announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Aug. 25, affects certain 2024 to 2026 Mustang models.

The issue lies in the engine compartment wiring harness ground connections, which may fracture, leading to a loss of drive power and other functions, such as windshield washing, headlights, air conditioning or the engine cooling fan. A loss of power increases the risk of a crash, the recall warns.

This defect causes the vehicles to fail to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards numbers 108 and 104, which pertain to lamps and windshield systems, respectively.

Ford to replace harness connectors at no cost

Ford is taking steps to address the issue by offering free replacements of the wiring harness ground terminals through its dealers.

Owners of the affected Mustangs will receive interim letters notifying them of the safety risk, with a second letter to follow once the remedy is available, expected in March 2027.

Ford says it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

In July, Ford recalled more than 100,000 Mustangs due to a defect in the rear differential pinion shaft, which could fracture and result in unintended movement or loss of drive power.
