Nissan Titan, Frontier recall overview:

  • Who: Nissan recalled more than 200,000 pickup trucks.
  • Why: The vehicles could roll away while in park.
  • Where: The recall is active in the United States.

Nissan recalled more than 200,000 pickup trucks as the vehicles may roll away while parked.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued the recall notice Sept. 7. It applies to 203,223 Nissan Frontiers and Titans, model years 2020 through 2023, equipped with nine-speed transmissions.

Nissan is also determining whether other Nissan or INFINITI vehicles may be affected, the Nissan recall states.

The NHTSA says the trucks can roll away because the transmission parking pawl, which prevents the vehicles from moving, may not engage when the trucks are in park.

“If the parking pawl does not engage, an affected vehicle may move after placing the shifter into ‘Park,’” the Nissan recall states. “If the customer does not engage the parking brake, potential for movement of the vehicle increases the risk of injury or crash.”

Owners are advised to use their parking brake every time they park.

Nissan recall remedy still in development

There have been no injuries so far related to the issue, Nissan says. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits

This recall is separate from a recall announced in June for certain pickup trucks, Nissan says. The company recalled more than 180,000 Frontiers and Titans from 2020-2022 for the same risk.

Nissan says it will send affected owners letters Nov. 1. A remedy plan for the affected vehicles is currently under development, the automaker said.

Meanwhile, in January Nissan North America faced a class action lawsuit alleging it manufactured and sold model year 2017-18 Nissan Altima and Sentra vehicles containing defective continuously variable transmissions.

In Aug 2021, our 2020 Titan was involved in an accident for this exact cause. Took it to the local Nissan for inspection – they didn’t find anything. Now we find out WHY the truck popped out of gear. Tired calling Nissan Consumer Affairs – Big waste of time. Reps were obviously told to read a blank statement “After thorough investigation into the service record and history of the vehicle we’re unable to help in anyway”….
