Bike helmet recall overview:

  • Who: Sakar International recalled three models of bike helmets.
  • Why: The recalled helmets do not comply with federal safety standards.
  • Where: The bike helmet recall is active in the United States.

Sakar International recalled three models of its bike helmets as they don’t comply with federal safety standards, posing a head injury risk.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website posted the recall Jan. 19. It applies to about 33,100 Credhedz Lizard Helmets, Crayola Dry Erase Helmets and Tony Hawk Multi-Purpose Helmets.

According to the recall, the helmets do not comply with the positional stability and retention system requirements of the CPSC federal safety standard for bicycle helmets.

“The helmets can fail to protect in the event of a crash, posing a risk of head injury,” the bike helmet recall states.

No injuries related to the recalled helmets have been reported so far, the company said.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Consumers can return recalled helmets for refund, bike helmet recall says

Sakar sold the recalled helmets at Big Lots, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and other stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com from November 2020 through October 2022 for about $30, the recall says.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled helmets and contact Sakar for instructions to return the helmet to Sakar for a refund in the form of a $30 gift card.

“Contact Sakar for prepaid postage packaging to return the helmet to them. Do not return the helmet to the retailer. Sakar is contacting all known purchasers,” the bike helmet recall says.

In other bike helmet news, around 90,000 bike helmets sold at Walmart, Best Buy, Segway and Amazon were recalled last year in two separate recalls due to posing a risk of head injury to cyclists if they fall.
