Ninebot Children’s Bicycle Helmets, Dimensions Bluetooth Speaker Helmets Recall Overview:

  • Who: Segway is recalling 960 of its Ninebot Children’s Bicycle Helmets, and Sakar International is recalling 89,000 of its Dimensions Bluetooth Speaker Helmets.
  • Why: The helmets do not comply with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s federal safety standard for bicycle helmets.
  • Where: The recall is effective in the United States in Canada.

Around 90,000 bike helmets sold at Walmart, Best Buy, Segway and Amazon are being recalled in two separate recalls due to posing a risk of head injury to cyclists if they fall.

In one of the recalls, Segway is pulling 960 of its Ninebot Children’s Bicycle Helmets from the shelves after it was discovered the helmets do not comply with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)’s federal safety standard for bicycle helmets.

“The helmets can fail to protect in the event of a crash, posing a risk of head injury,” the recall notice says. Luckily, no injuries have been reported to date.

The Ninebot Kids bike helmets are orange and white and come in size extra small. Ninebot is printed on the sides of the helmet, and Model NB-410 is printed on a label on the inside of the helmet. Only helmets with batch code SN4500056024 and an August 2020 date are included in the recall, the company says.

Segway is urging consumers to stop using the recalled helmets immediately and return them for a full refund. The helmets were sold at Best Buy and other retailers nationwide and online at Segway.com and Amazon.com from December 2020 through May 2021 for between $30 and $50. Segway says it is contacting all known purchasers to facilitate returns using prepaid postage.

Sakar International Dimensions Bluetooth Speaker Helmets Do Not Comply With CPSC Guidelines

Meanwhile, Sakar International is recalling 89,000 of its Dimensions Bluetooth Speaker Helmets in the United States and 272 in Canada because they also do not comply with the CPSC guidelines and post a risk of head injury.

The helmets were sold exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide and online at Walmart.com from July 2020 through January 2022 for about $25, according to a recall notice.

The Dimensions Bluetooth Speaker multi-purpose helmets are black with black straps and a black buckle. The white label on the inside of the helmet contains the Item # ACTGEAR-238BTS in the bottom left corner.

Sakar is telling consumers to stop using the helmets and contact the company for instructions on receiving a free replacement helmet. Walmart will contact all known purchasers, Sakar says.

“Consumers should not return the helmet to Walmart and should contact Sakar for a free replacement and to facilitate returns using prepaid postage packaging,” the notice says.

Although neither of these recalls have resulted in legal action to date, in 2021 Trek Bicycles was hit with a class action lawsuit over the safety of its bike helmets. Consumers accused the company of fraud and misrepresentation in a class action lawsuit claiming its premium line of bike helmets doesn’t deliver on its safety promises.
