A new class action lawsuit accuses FCA US of misrepresenting the safety and dependability of its Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid electric SUVs.
A group of Jeep owners claim FCA failed to disclose and adequately repair two defects in the Jeep vehicles despite marketing the vehicles as “safe, dependable, rugged, high-performing and emissions-friendly hybrid-electric vehicles.”
FCA issued a recall for one of the defects in June 2026 and multiple recalls for the other defect between November 2023 and October 2025, according to the Jeep class action lawsuit.
The Jeep owners argue that the recalls, however, did not adequately repair the defects “within a reasonable time,” leaving consumers with vehicles unsafe to drive or park near structures.
The first defect is in the electrical connector of the Electric Hydraulic Power Steering Pump (EHPSP) in the 2021-2026 Jeep Wrangler vehicles, according to the Jeep lawsuit, which says the issue causes overheating of combustible materials in the vehicle that can result in “catastrophic” fires.
The second defect, meanwhile, is in the lithium-ion battery in the Jeep vehicles that has led to numerous fires, safety recalls and guidance from FCA that imposes highly restrictive limitations on consumers’ use of the vehicles, according to the Jeep lawsuit.
Jeep owners relied on FCA claims when buying, leasing vehicles, lawsuit says
The Jeep owners claim they relied on FCA’s representations about the vehicles’ range, mileage, hybrid features and safety when they purchased or leased their vehicles.
“Plaintiffs would not have purchased their vehicles, or would have paid less for their vehicles, had they known, prior to their respective time of purchase or lease, that their vehicles utilized the defective batteries and EHPSPs,” the Jeep class action lawsuit says.
The group alleges FCA fraudulently concealed information, breached implied and express warranties and violated the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and Florida Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act.
The plaintiffs demand a jury trial and request injunctive relief, along with an award of actual, consequential, statutory and exemplary damages.
The lawsuit cites a trio of class action lawsuits filed against FCA over the alleged issue. Another class action lawsuit, which does not appear in the complaint, was filed against FCA and Doug Smith Autoplex earlier this year by a consumer claiming the automaker sold Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee vehicles with a battery defect that makes them prone to fires.
