Knorr recall overview:
- Who: MSI Express Inc is recalling approximately 8.2 tons of chicken and rice soup mix products
- Why: The product contains milk, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label.
- Where: United States and Canada
More than eight tons of chicken and rice soup mix products are being recalled in the United States and Canada as they contain milk—a known allergen—which is not declared on the product label.
The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) posted the recall to its website July 20.
The recall applies to 16,498 pounds—or 8.2 tons—of Knorr Professional Soup Du Jour Red Thai Style Curry Chicken With Rice Soup Mix, distributed by MSI Express Inc., a Texas company.
The affected products have “best by” dates of January 19, 2024 for products bought in the United States, and April 26, 2023, for products bought in Canada.
According to the recall, the Thai-style curry chicken with rice soup mix items contain milk, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label.
Company testing found dairy in the product
The problem was discovered when the company notified FSIS that it tested the soup for allergens and found dairy in it. The company said this happened because it “received the incorrect ingredient component.”
“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them and restaurants are urged not to serve these products,” the recall says. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products so far, the recall states.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
The products were distributed in the United States and Canada to professional food service trades, such as restaurants, cafeterias, fast food chains, and sports stadiums, as well as through online sales.
Meanwhile, a 2018 class action lawsuit filed against Unilever United States Inc. claimed that the company’s Knorr Pasta Sides contained 40 percent nonfunctional slack-fill.
