Natierra lead in blueberries recall overview:

  • Who: BrandStorm Inc. recalled Natierra Organic Freeze-Dried Blueberries.
  • Why: The blueberries may contain elevated levels of lead.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an “urgent” recall of Natierra Organic Freeze-Dried Blueberries as the products may contain elevated levels of lead.

The FDA website posted the recall on July 14. It applies to two lots of the freeze-dried berries: lot numbers 2021363-1 and 2022026-1.

Manufacturer BrandStorm Inc. says it voluntarily recalled the pouches of blueberries because of the potential presence of lead above the FDA’s recommended limits.

A lab in Maryland identified the issue following testing in Maryland, the Natierra recall notice says.

While an original heavy metal report showed no presence of lead, further investigation revealed that the products’ country of origin is Lithuania and “aggressive monitoring of heavy metals may be deemed necessary.”

“As an immediate action the packing site is actively working to enhance the food safety system by implementing mandatory batch testing for heavy metal,” the Natierra recall states.

Natierra warns consumers not to eat the blueberries and to throw away the product. The blueberries were sold nationwide and online, and refunds are available at the location of purchase.

Natierra recall claims lead can cause damage to nervous system

Lead is a naturally occurring element that can occur in fruits and vegetables during cultivation, the FDA says.

People with high blood levels of lead may also show no symptoms, but the condition may cause damage to the nervous system and internal organs. If a child is exposed to enough lead for a protracted period of time, it can cause permanent damage to the central nervous system.

To date, BrandStorm Inc. has not received any reports of adverse events related to use of the product as part of this proactive recall, it said.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

In June of last year, Dole recalled a number of packs of its blueberries after it discovered a potential cyclospora contamination in the berries.
