The State of Oklahoma is suing Roblox, alleging the online gaming platform failed to adequately protect children from sexual predators despite marketing itself as a safe environment for minors.

According to the complaint, Roblox allegedly lacked sufficient safety measures to prevent predators from using the platform to contact, groom and exploit children. The lawsuit claims both individual predators and organized groups used Roblox to solicit minors for sexual activity and, in some cases, kidnapping and sexual assault.

The state alleges approximately two-thirds of U.S. children ages 9 to 12 have Roblox accounts and that children as young as 5 can create accounts without parental permission or knowledge.

Despite the platform’s popularity among children, the Roblox child safety lawsuit claims the company failed for years to implement meaningful age verification systems, allowing adults to create multiple accounts posing as children.

“Roblox marketed itself as a safe place for children but turned a blind eye as predators targeted and exploited minors on its platform,” Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond said in a statement, as reported by Law360.

The complaint also cites media reports and statements allegedly made by Roblox executives and developers acknowledging concerns about child safety on the platform.

Oklahoma alleges Roblox prioritized engagement over safety

The child safety lawsuit claims Roblox allowed sexually explicit content, roleplay environments and inappropriate interactions to remain accessible to children through areas of the platform that predators allegedly used to target minors.

According to the complaint, Roblox was also used to create and distribute child sexual abuse material and allegedly failed to take sufficient action to stop the activity because the company prioritized user engagement and profits.

The state further alleges safety updates introduced in November 2024 provided only limited protections and did not adequately prevent predators from communicating with or grooming children.

Roblox denied the allegations and stated the company has implemented “multilayered” safety systems that include artificial intelligence moderation, human review teams and restrictions on sharing images or videos in chats.

The company also said it recently became the first online platform to require age checks for certain chat features and plans to separate younger users from adults through age-based account systems.

Earlier this year, a California federal judge ordered a proposed class action lawsuit against Roblox to arbitration, finding users were adequately notified that clicking “Sign Up” or “Continue” bound them to the platform’s terms of use, including its arbitration clause. The lawsuit alleges Roblox secretly collected users’ personal data, including data from children under 13.
