- Where: The Jeep recall is active in the United States and Canada.
Chrysler is recalling more than 61,000 Jeep Cherokee vehicles due to a potential powertrain defect.
The May 7 recall notice covers certain 2019–2023 model year Jeep Cherokee vehicles. A similar recall was issued in Canada, affecting 20,781 vehicles.
The defect concerns the vehicle’s power transfer unit — a component that distributes engine torque between the front and rear axles. According to the Jeep recall notice, “a failed PTU may result in a loss of drive power or vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.”
All affected vehicles are classified under the powertrain component category and are limited to 2019 through 2023 Jeep Cherokee models sold in the United States and Canada.
Jeep Cherokee recall: No remedy currently available
Chrysler is yet to announce a remedy for the recalled Jeep Cherokee vehicles. In the meantime, FCA US plans to mail interim owner notification letters on or around June 25, informing affected drivers of the safety risk. Once a permanent remedy is finalized, additional correspondence will follow.
Vehicle identification numbers associated with this recall are searchable on NHTSA.gov, allowing owners to confirm whether their specific vehicle is included.

FCA US has not reported any confirmed incidents of injury related to the Jeep Cherokee PTU recall at this time. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
In another Jeep recall, 11,767 Jeep Wagoneer S vehicles from model years 2024 to 2026 were recalled due to a defect in the liftgate hinge cover.
