Update:

  • General Motors is now recalling 570,434 trucks in the United States due to a tailgate issue that can increase the risk of a crash.
  • The expanded recall comes after the company recalled 323,232 trucks in early February and now includes 311,368 2020-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 and 259,066 GMC Sierra 2500/3500 vehicles in the United States.
  • Water can get into the vehicle tailgates and short circuit the electronic gate-release switch, leading the tailgate to inadvertently unlatch while the vehicle is in park, the recall says.

(Feb. 12, 2024)

General Motors (GM) issued a truck recall for more than 320,000 of its model year 2020-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 vehicles over concerns the tailgate may inadvertently unlatch while the vehicle is in park.

The automaker is concerned that, under certain conditions, water may come into contact with an electronic gate-release switch located in the tailgates of the recalled pickup trucks, potentially causing a short circuit and leading the gate to inadvertently unlatch, according to the recall

“Under certain circumstances the tailgate design permits water to intrude into the gate, which in combination with an unsealed switch can result in a short circuit,” the GM truck recall states.

GM to use replacement parts to prevent tailgate unlatch issue

GM said it plans to remedy the issue by having its dealers replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies on the recalled pickup trucks with parts using a material that improves resistance to water intrusion, the recall says.

The automaker advises owners of the recalled pickup trucks to make sure their tailgates are closed and latched before driving.

GM began notifying its dealers about the recall on Feb. 1, 2024. The company expects to begin notifying owners on March 18, 2024, according to the recall.

The GM recall is the latest in a number of recent vehicle recalls from automakers such as Ford, Volvo, Kia and Hyundai.

My GMC tail gait no longer works when I press the release button. It stopped working after heavy rains this winter. Would like to get this repaired but have not received any updates from GMC.
