Toyota is recalling more than 48,000 Tacoma vehicles, specifically the 2024-2025 models, due to a defect in the shock absorbers that may lead to reservoir detachment, increasing the risk of road hazards.
The recall notice was submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Aug. 6.
The Toyota recall affects 4,453 units of the 2024 Tacoma Hybrid and 43,827 units of the 2024-2025 Tacoma models. The vehicles in question are equipped with specific shock absorbers that have an external oil reservoir attached by a welded flange.
Over time, corrosion can occur on the untreated metal surfaces due to moisture, potentially causing the reservoir to detach from the shock absorber.
“If the reservoir detaches while driving, it can create a road hazard, potentially increasing the risk of a crash or an injury to another road user,” the Toyota recall states.
Toyota to inspect and replace shock absorber assemblies at no cost
The issue was first identified in September 2025, when Toyota received reports of leaking shock absorbers. Further investigations revealed that a combination of rock chipping and salt spray could lead to excessive corrosion, causing the reservoir to detach.
Toyota’s dynamic testing confirmed that detachment could reduce suspension dampening and create a road hazard.
To address the issue, Toyota will notify all known owners of the affected Toyota Tacoma vehicles to return them to dealers for inspection and replacement of the shock absorber assemblies with improved versions at no cost.
Notifications to owners are scheduled to begin by Oct. 5, with dealer communications having started on Aug. 6.

Toyota says it has not received any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
