VW fuel leak recall overview:

  • Who: Volkswagen Group of America has issued a recall for more than 260,000 vehicles.
  • Why: The recall was issued over concerns the vehicles were equipped with a defective part that could cause a fuel leak, creating a fire risk.
  • Where: The recall affects certain Volkswagen and Audi vehicle owners nationwide.

Volkswagen Group of America issued a vehicle recall for more than 260,000 VW automobiles earlier this month over concerns they could experience a fuel leak, posing a fire risk.

The recall involves certain model year 2015-2020 Audi A3 Sedan, Volkswagen Golf GTI and Volkswagen Golf A7 vehicles, 2015-2019 Audi A3 Cabriolet, 2019-2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, 2018 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen GP, 2018-2019 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen A7 and 2015-2017 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen vehicles.

VW said it is concerned the recalled vehicles were equipped with a defective suction jet pump that could cause fuel to flow into and accumulate in the vehicles’ evaporative emissions (EVAP) systems before potentially leaking through the charcoal canister filter element.

“Leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, may result in a fire,” the VW fuel leak recall states.

Signs of VW fuel leak include refueling issues, smell of fuel

Vehicle owners affected by the recall may experience problems while refueling — including early-stopping fuel nozzles and spillback — and notice an odor of fuel, according to the VW fuel leak recall.

The automaker said it plans to remedy the issue by replacing the suction jet pump inside the fuel tank of the recalled vehicles with the latest version at no cost. Volkswagen plans to notify affected vehicle owners April 12.

Volkswagen previously issued a recall for more than 47,000 of its model year 2019-2020 Jetta vehicles in September 2023 over concerns they may have been equipped with an ignition switch that can fail, especially during times of high temperatures.

We received the recall notice for a 2015 VW Golf and 2 days later had a gas smell by the rear passenger seat. After a trip to the dealership, they said the entire fuel tanks needs replaced because it is “faulty”. They did not present anything as under warranty, and charged $3k for replacement.

My Volkswagen had several issues and it’s a 2022 calendar year model. It had an oil leak, requires battery replace, has a horrible front sensor, and shuts off. This vehicle was purchased brand new.
