Tesla recalls 20,000 Model Y, Model 3 vehicles due to headlight brightness

ATesla is recalling more than 20,000 Tesla Model Y and Model 3 vehicles due to concerns over excessively bright headlights. The issue, which affects the low beam headlights, could potentially impair the visibility of oncoming drivers, thereby increasing the risk of accidents.

The affected vehicles include 18,735 Model Y units from model years 2020 to 2023 and 1,614 Model 3 units from 2017 to 2023.

According to a recall report released on Aug. 11,the headlights exceed the maximum light output allowed by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108.

Tesla had initially sought an exemption from the NHTSA, arguing that the issue was inconsequential to vehicle safety, but the petition was denied in July 2026.

Recall: Tesla’s headlight brightness poses safety risks

As of early August 2026, Tesla had received three warranty claims and one field report related to the headlight issue, but fortunately, no accidents or injuries have been reported.

Tesla is currently developing a remedy to address the headlight issue. The company plans to notify affected vehicle owners by mail starting Sept. 15.

Tesla states it has not received any reports of injuries or accidents related to the Tesla recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

In other Tesla updates, the company recently agreed to a class action settlement to resolve claims it charged “idle fees” to California customers who purchased vehicles with free lifetime Supercharging.
