Toyota Tacomas recall overview:

  • Who: Toyota recalled about 381,000 Tacoma trucks.
  • Why: Certain Tacoma vehicles may have a defect that can cause axle-retaining nuts to loosen and possibly fall off, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Where: The Toyota recall applies to certain Tacomas sold in the United States.

On Feb. 27, Toyota announced a safety recall due to a defect affecting approximately 381,000 Tacomas in the United States.

The recall includes certain model year 2022 and 2023 Toyota Tacoma vehicles that may have welding debris on the rear axle assembly left over from the manufacturing process. This debris can potentially cause axle-retaining nuts to loosen over time and fall off, possibly causing a part to separate from the axle, according to the recall.

“If separation occurs, this can affect vehicle stability and brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash,” the automaker says in the recall announcement.

Toyota says it will inspect recalled vehicles for the defect, retighten the axle-retaining nuts and repair or replace any damaged axle components at no cost.

The recall notice does not say whether the defect caused any accidents or injuries.

Tacoma recall just one of the latest recent Toyota recalls

Toyota will notify affected customers about the Tacoma recall via mail by late April, the recall notice says.

Consumers can see if their vehicle is included in the recall by visiting toyota.com/recall or nhtsa.gov/recalls. They can also contact the Toyota Brand Engagement Center at 800-331-4331.

CNN notes the Tacoma recall is just one of many recalls Toyota issued in recent months.

The automaker recently recalled 280,000 trucks and SUVs for an issue that reportedly resulted in trucks “creeping” forward when in neutral and recalled 1 million vehicles over an airbag sensor issue.

A consumer also recently hit Toyota with a class action lawsuit alleging it failed to disclose a power liftgate defect in some of its RAV4 vehicles.

I happen to have one of the recalled Tacomas, first brand new vehicle ever in my life & this happens! Toyota is acting like it’s no big deal!! Wouldn’t they want my truck off the road if I can lose my rear axle? Possibly die? $40,000 for this agony? I’m livid!

    1. Brenda says:

But did you die. It says “it could possibly make a retaining nut fall off” it also says there are no non failures at this time. iI Toyota truly thought it was going to kill people or injur them I’m sure they would make it a big deal and get the truck’s off the road. I too have one of these Tacoma’s included in the recall. All you have to do is go in and they will make sure it’s okay.

It’s obvious that he didn’t die. I’m sure you don’t have a Toyota. This poor man first car in his life that’s what he’s stating. Toyota has had so many recalls. I love Toyotas but that was in 1997

        1. Bmw says:

There’s 4 nuts on the back of both rear axles holding the axle shaft into the housing. Chances of a catastrophic event are slim to none. Toyota is one of the few manufacturers that comes right out and says there’s a problem with their product barcause they care. ” hey look we made a mistake” so rather than ignore it and sweep it under the rug like many other manufacturers… they look out for their customers. I understand stand being upset and all, as I currently have 4 toyotas of various years and models, have always been great, dependable vehicles.
