Tesla Overheating Infotainment Touchscreen Recall Overview:

  • Who: Tesla has recalled nearly 130,000 of its Model S, 3, Y and X vehicles.
  • Why: The company initiated the recall over concern that the vehicles contain infotainment central processing units that are prone to overheating, inhibiting their function.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

Tesla has recalled nearly 130,000 of its Model S, 3, Y and X vehicles over concerns that they contain infotainment central processing units (CPUs) that are prone to overheating.

The recall affects Tesla’s 2021-2022 Model S, 2022 Model 3, 2021-2022 Model X and 2022 Model Y vehicles, according to a recall notice published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on May 3.

Tesla says the infotainment units “may not cool sufficiently” either during or in preparation of fast-charging.

Subsequent higher-than-expected temperatures can cause the infotainment units to “slow processing or restart,” according to the Tesla recall.

Further, Tesla says that slower or restarted processing caused by overheating of the infotainment units can “cause the center screen display to lag or appear blank.”

Tesla Recall Says Overheating Can Affect Display, Increase Crash Risk

If the center touchscreen appears blank or lags it could render the vehicles’ rearview camera display, drive modes, telltales and windshield visibility controls unavailable, increasing the risk of a collision, according to the Tesla recall.

Tesla says it began to remedy the issue on May 3, at which time it deployed an over-the-air firmware update that will “improve the management of the CPU temperature and associated communications with elevated temperature operation.”

Tesla has informed stores and service centers of the recall and will mail owner notification letters beginning July 1, according to the recall.

Last month, Tesla recalled more than 7,200 of its 2021-2022 Model X vehicles over concerns that their left or right front-row side curtain airbags may not deploy properly when the windows are down.
