BMW is recalling 61,221 vehicles of various makes and models due to a sunroof safety issue.
The recall was posted April 20 to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on behalf of BMW of North America, LLC.
The recall applies to certain 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe (430i, 430i xDrive and M440i xDrive); 2019-2022 X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 xDrive50i, X5 M50i and X5M; 2021-2022 X5 xdrive45e; 2020-2022 X6 sDrive40i, X6 xDrive40i, X6 xDrive50i and X6M; and 2019-2023 X7 xDrive40i, X7 xDrive50i, X7 M50i, X7 xDrive60i, X7 M60i, X7M and Alpina XB7 vehicles.
According to the notice, the vehicles have potentially faulty sunroof control unit programming that allows them to be closed without the key fob being present in the car.
“As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 118, ‘Power-Operated Window Systems,’” the recall notice says.
The issue could result in injury to unattended people or animals in the vehicle, the notice states.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
BMW To Reprogram Control Unit Free of Charge, According To Recall
Dealers will reprogram the roof function control unit free of charge, the recall notice says. The issue will require reprogramming of the vehicle module. This can be done in person or over the air.
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 13, 2022.
Owners may contact BMW customer service with additional questions at 1-800-525-7417.
The news comes after a Pennsylvania federal judge last year denied a motion to throw out a class action lawsuit that alleges BMW concealed an engine defect that caused some of its vehicles to consume excess oil.
