Tesla Model X Airbags Recall Overview:
- Who: Tesla is recalling more than 7,200 2021-2022 Model X vehicles.
- Why: The left or right front-row side curtain airbags may not deploy as intended when the windows are lowered, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.
- Where: The recall is nationwide.
Tesla is recalling more than 7,200 of its 2021-2022 Model X vehicles due to an airbag issue that can increase the risk of injury during a crash.
The recall was issued April 8 on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.
It applies to 7,289 of Tesla’s 2021-2022 Model X vehicles that have an issue where the left or right front-row side curtain airbags may not deploy as intended when the windows are lowered.
“Improper side curtain airbag deployment can increase the risk of injury during a crash,” the recall notice states.
The Model X airbag issue also means that the vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 226 “Ejection Mitigation.”
To remedy the situation, Tesla Service Centers will replace the left and right front-row side curtain airbags free of charge, the recall states.
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 7, 2022.
Second Tesla Recall Issued This Month
The recall comes after Tesla issued a second recall on April 14 over its “Boombox” feature, which allows vehicle owners to customize the sound their horn makes.
The recall will affect almost 595,000 Tesla vehicles, including the 2017-2022 Model 3 and certain 2020-2022 Model X, Y and S vehicles.
Tesla says it will disable “Boombox” if a driver is summoning the vehicle at a low speed.
The company previously disabled “Boombox” if a Tesla vehicle was in drive, reverse or neutral gear.
Tesla says the recall fix will be made through an online software update, the same way it was during the initial February recall.
The recall comes after it was determined that the “Boombox” feature violates federal safety standards in regard to the pedestrian warning noises electric vehicles can make.
