Mercedes-Benz Brake Booster Corrosion Recall Overview:

  • Who: Mercedes-Benz recalled more than 290,000 of its model year 2006-2012 GL, ML and R-Class vehicles.
  • Why: The recall was initiated over concerns that the vehicles’ brake boosters were susceptible to corrosion.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for more than 290,000 of its GL, ML and R-Class vehicles over concerns with the vehicles’ brake booster.

The recall affects Mercedes-Benz GL, ML and R-Class vehicles with model years ranging from 2006 to 2012, according to a recall notice published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on May 11.

The recall is a “stop-drive” notice, meaning vehicle owners are being urged to immediately stop driving their vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz says the reason for the recall is that “the function of the brake booster might be affected due to advanced corrosion in the joint area of its housing.”

Over time, the corrosion could lead to the brake booster leaking, which would reduce brake force support and force a driver to apply more force to the brake pedal in order to achieve the same level of deceleration, according to the Mercedes-Benz recall.

Mercedes-Benz says the effects of the corrosion could also potentially “increase stopping distances” and lead to mechanical damage in the brake booster if a driver has to brake too hard.

Mercedes-Benz Recall Blames Moisture For Brake Booster Corrosion

The corrosion is caused by moisture that may “wick” under a rubber sleeve that has been installed around the brake booster for “aesthetic reasons,” according to the Mercedes-Benz recall.

Mercedes-Benz says it will remedy the issue by having an authorized dealer remove the rubber sleeve and inspect to see if any corrosion has occurred. Vehicles without corrosion can be driven “without any further action.”

Vehicles with advanced corrosion, however, will be subject to further tests and, for those that fail, will be required to get a brake booster replacement, according to the Mercedes-Benz recall.

A class action lawsuit was filed against Mercedes-Benz earlier this month by a consumer claiming the company concealed a defect in the transmission control units housed in some of its vehicles.
