Bell Sports has recalled more than 15,000 bike helmets as they can fail to protect users in a crash.

The recall was published to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website on June 8. It applies to about 15,000 Giro Merit bicycle helmets sold in the United States and about 1,465 sold in Canada.

According to the recall, the helmets do not comply with CPSC federal safety standards for bicycle helmets.

“The helmets can fail to protect in the event of a crash, posing a risk of head injury,” the recall states.

No injuries have been reported so far, the company said. Giro is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Giro offers free replacement or refund

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Giro Merit helmets and contact Giro for a free replacement helmet or a full refund, the company said.

The recall only involves Giro Merit helmets manufactured prior to Jan. 2023.  The recalled Giro Merit helmet can be identified by the model’s name “Merit” on the rear/side of the helmet. It can also be identified by the inner helmet sticker which has the model’s name “Merit” written on it and also GH230.

The recalled helmets were sold at Epicenter Cycling, Freewheel Bike West Bank, Velotech and other stores nationwide, online at Giro.com, Backcountry.com and other websites from Sept. 2021 through Jan. 2023 for about $220.

In April, JBM International issued its own recall for about 5,300 adult bike helmets as they can fail to protect users during a crash.
