Sea-Doo Jet Ski Intake Grate Defect Class Action Overview:
- Who: A Guatemala-based business and jet ski rider are suing the makers of the Sea-Doo.
- Why: The plaintiffs say the Sea-Doos suffer from dangerous defects that can and have injured users.
- Where: The case is pending in Florida federal court.
Sea-Doo jet skis suffer from a dangerous defect that caused one to allegedly explode in Guatemala, injuring its rider, a new class action lawsuit alleges.
Plaintiffs Bella Vista Lote 56, S.A. and Lorenzo Figueroa filed the class action complaint against BRP US Inc., Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. and BRP Inc. May 5 in a Florida federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.
The Sea-Doo personal watercrafts suffer from defects that cause the intake grate to detach, the lawsuit alleges.
The defendants are aware of these defects but continue selling the products when they should be recalled and repaired, the plaintiffs say.
“The Sea-Doos currently present a safety hazard and are unreasonably dangerous to consumers,” the class action alleges.
Sea-Doo Rider Ejected at High Speed, Class Action Claims
According to the lawsuit, Plaintiff Bella Vista, a Guatemala business, bought the Sea-Doo and lent it to Figueroa to ride.
Figueroa took the Sea-Doo for a ride on Río Dulce where he accelerated to a speed of around 59 mph, the lawsuit says.
“At some point shortly after reaching this speed, the Sea-Doo ejected Figueroa from
the vessel in what seemed like an explosion,” according to the class action. “Figueroa lost consciousness and had to be rescued from the river by bystanders.”
The lawsuit says Figueroa suffered great physical injury, pain and suffering, physical discomfort and emotional distress. Meanwhile, the Sea-Doo lost two-thirds of its hull, rendering it a total loss.
“BRP’s sale of defective Sea-Doos puts consumers like Figueroa at risk of injury, serious bodily harm, or death,” the lawsuit states.
The plaintiffs are looking to represent anyone who bought a 2019 Sea-Doo GTX, RXT or Wake PRO equipped with 230 and 300 engines plus a class of users who were injured riding the Sea-Doos.
They’re suing for breach of state consumer laws, breach of warranty and negligence and asking for an injunction to force the company to recall and repair all the affected Sea-Doos immediately.
The plaintiffs are also seeking certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.
The class action comes after a 2017 lawsuit in which two Sea-Doo owners said the manufacturers of Sea-Doo personal watercraft failed to properly deal with a defect in the vehicles’ exhaust system.
Do you think the company should recall the Sea-Doos while the claims are investigated? Let us know in the comments!

So I was injured pretty bad and literally almost lost my life and or my arm , I say that with zero exaggeration. I have owned 3 boats in my life and am pretty mechanically inclined and am in disbelief that the machine was capable of grabbing a rope and it having incredible force. People should be warned on how dangerous this could be and I say that as a big fan of the jet. Ski. . I am mad to see this problem has been brought to their attention and I didn’t get the warning ? I hope it’s not some small warning in a book that comes with it .
