Tony Hawk helmets recall overview:
- Who: U.S. product safety officials are recalling more than 12,000 Tony Hawk helmets
- Why: The helmets can fail to protect the head in the event of a crash
- Where: The helmets were sold in Walmarts nationwide and online
More than 12,000 Tony Hawk helmets sold at Walmarts nationwide and online are being recalled as they can fail to protect the head in a crash.
The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) posted the recall notice to its website July 14. The recall applies to 12,655 Sakar Tony Hawk silver helmets with item number AGE2515STH-SIL printed on the inside.
“The recalled helmets do not comply with the positional stability and retention system requirements of the CPSC federal safety standard for bicycle helmets,” the notice states.
“The helmets can fail to protect in the event of a crash, posing a risk of head injury.”
The helmets, which feature pro-skater Tony Hawk’s signature, were sold in Walmart stores nationwide and online at www.walmart.com from March 2022 through June 2022 for about $30.
Helmets were given as replacement for another recalled helmet
The helmets were made by New Jersey company Sakar International, and this recall follows another recent helmet recall from the company.
In March, Sakar International recalled 89,000 of its Dimensions Bluetooth Speaker Helmets in the United States and 272 in Canada because they did not comply with the CPSC guidelines and pose a risk of head injury.
After that recall, these Tony Hawk silver helmets were provided as replacement helmets. But now they themselves are also being recalled, the notice says.
“Sakar will contact consumers who received the replacement helmet as a remedy.”
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled helmets and contact Sakar for instructions on receiving a refund in the form of a $40 Walmart gift card.
They should not return the helmet to Walmart and should instead contact Sakar for the gift card and to facilitate returns using prepaid postage packaging, the notice adds. Walmart will contact all known purchasers.
There have been no known injuries so far, the recall says. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
