Green Giant, EveryPlate, Onion Recalls Overview:

  • Who: A nationwide whole onion recall began last month that is affecting multiple brands, including Green Giant and EveryPlate.
  • Why: Reports of salmonella contamination sickening hundreds of people across the country spurred the massive recall.
  • Where: The recalls include products nationwide.

Green Giant, EveryPlate, along with other companies have been affected by a massive recall for whole onions that began last month following hundreds of reports of salmonella poisoning across more than 30 states.

The onions at the center of the recall were imported from Chihuahua, Mexico between July 1 and Aug. 31 and supplied to multiple brands by ProSource Produce of Hailey, Idaho and Keeler Family Farms of Deming, New Mexico, reports mlive.com

The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers, retailers, and restaurants to stop eating, serving, or selling any products that contain the affected onions, which include jumbo, colossal, medium, summer, and sweet.

ProSource packaged the onions in mesh sacks that ranged between 50 pounds and two pounds and in cartons ranging in size from 50 pounds to five pounds, reports mlive.com. Keeler Family Farms onions were distributed in 25-50 pound mesh sacks.

Green Giant, EveryPlate, Others Announce Recalls Related to Tainted Onions

The onions have been distributed by brands including Big Bull, Peak Fresh Produce, Sierra Madre, Markon First Corp., Markon Essentials, Rio Blue, ProSource, Rio Valley, Sysco Imperial, Green Giant, EveryPlate, and HelloFresh.

Potandon Produce LLC — the parent company of Green Giant — announced on Oct. 23 that it was voluntarily recalling red, yellow, and white onions that had been sent to distribution centers between July 9 and Aug. 6.

Mel Davenport, CEO of Potandon Produce, said none of its onions have tested positive for salmonella but that the recall is being done under “an abundance of caution.”

“The recalled onions are past their typical shelf life and to our knowledge, none of them have tested positive for Salmonella,” Davenport said. “Nevertheless, we are initiating this recall in an abundance of caution because we want to minimize even the slightest risk to public health.”

The recall does not affect any Green Giant canned or frozen vegetable product, the company said.

EveryPlate, meanwhile, also announced its recall on Oct. 23 for onions used in its meal kits. The company has asked consumers to discard any onions received between July 7 and Sept. 8.

“We sincerely apologize for this supplier-related incident,” the company said. “Your safety is our highest priority and we have taken immediate steps to ensure our onions are no longer sourced from this supplier.”

EveryPlate noted that cooking the meal kits at 165 degrees fahrenheit, as instructed, would be sufficient in killing any potential Salmonella bacteria.

The FDA is advising consumers to throw out any whole onions they don’t know the origins of and to thoroughly clean any kitchen utensils or appliances that the produce may have come in contact with, reports mlive.com.

The CDC estimates that salmonella bacteria causes around 1.35 million infections in the US each year, leading to approximately 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths.

Symptoms, including fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, commonly begin within six hours to six days of infection and can last for between four to seven days, according to the CDC, which says most people are able to recover without the use of antibiotics.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor the onion recall and related food safety issues.
