HelloFresh Onion Recall Overview:

  • Who: Meal-kit delivery company HelloFresh is recalling its products with onions delivered between July 7 and September 8.
  • Why: The onions included in the meal-kits are subject to a recall by their supplier after being linked to a nationwide salmonella outbreak.
  • Where: The recall is taking place across the US.

HelloFresh, a meal kit delivery company, has recalled all of its products containing onions that were sent out between July 7 and September 8 due to the risk of salmonella contamination.

The recall is linked to the current nationwide recall of a range of red, yellow, and white onions imported by ProSource Inc from Chihuahua, Mexico, after the onions were tied to a multistate salmonella outbreak by a Food and Drug Administration investigation.

As of October 22, the onion recall outbreak has seen 129 people hospitalized and 652 people infected.

HelloFresh Onion Recall Affects Months of Meal Kits

HelloFresh says in its recall notice that consumers should throw out any onions they received in the meal kits delivered between July 7 and September 8, but onions delivered after that time period were fine to be consumed.

“In the event that the onions have been consumed, please note that thoroughly cooking the product to 165ºF/74ºC, as instructed on the recipe, will kill the salmonella bacteria,” states the recall notice.

The company says that anyone experiencing salmonella symptoms should contact their health care provider immediately. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.

HelloFresh added that it sincerely apologized for the supplier-related incident, saying “your safety is our highest priority and we have taken immediate steps to ensure our onions are no longer sourced from this supplier.”

It said in the onion recall notice that all of its facilities were Safe Quality Food certified and its teams followed a “rigorous process to maintain the safety and quality of our meal kits.”

The recall dates back to the reporting of a mysterious salmonella outbreak at the start of October, which saw at least 400 people fall ill across 35 states in the US with no source identified.

Following an FDA investigation, a nationwide recall of onions imported by ProSource Inc was issued last week after the onions were tied to 20 illness subclusters. The subclusters were associated with restaurants and food service locations where the onions were served raw.

State officials collected food products from some of the restaurants where sick people ate and found a sample of the disease in a takeout condiment cup containing cilantro, lime, and onion.
