Dairy Queen recalls Galliker Dairy chocolate ice cream mix over metal shavings

Galliker Dairy, based in Altoona, Pennsylvania, voluntarily recalled 74 cases of its DQ Chocolate Reduced Fat Ice Cream Mix after metal shavings were found in the product, according to an enforcement notice filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The chocolate ice cream mix was never sold in supermarkets or other retail stores. It was shipped exclusively in 5-gallon bags to Dairy Queen restaurants, where it was combined with the chain’s soft-serve machines to make chocolate soft-serve menu items.

Galliker initiated the recall on May 21. The FDA later classified the action as a Class II recall on July 28, meaning the product may cause temporary or medically reversible health effects if consumed. 

Chocolate ice cream recall requires no consumer action

The FDA lists the recall as terminated as of July 30 and the code JUN1226 likely reflects the mix’s expiration date, therefore the affected product is no longer likely to be in use at restaurants regardless of the recall.

It remains unclear whether any Dairy Queen locations actually served the recalled mix before it was pulled. 

At this time, consumers do not need to take any action in response to the recall; however, consumers with questions can contact Galliker Dairy directly at 814-266-8702.

Galliker Dairy has not reported any illnesses or injuries linked to the recalled ice cream mix. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
