ProSource Inc is recalling a range of red, yellow, and white onions imported from the Chihuahua, Mexico and sold nationwide due to their ties to a multistate salmonella outbreak, which has seen 129 people hospitalized and 652 people infected.
The company agreed to the voluntary recall after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found the link between the outbreak and the onions imported to the United States between July 1, 2021 and August 27, 2021.
There were 20 illness subclusters found and investigated in this salmonella outbreak, all of which were associated with restaurants and food service locations where the onions were served raw, the FDA says in the recall notice.
State officials collected food products from some of the restaurants where sick people ate and found a sample of the disease in a takeout condiment cup containing cilantro, lime, and onion.
“The investigation is ongoing to determine the source of contamination and if additional products or firms are linked to illness.”
All ProSource Onions Potentially Contaminated, Warns Agency
At this stage, ProSource Inc is recalling red, yellow, and white onions imported from the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, with import dates from July 1, 2021 through August 27, 2021. The onion types include jumbo, colossal, medium, and sweet onions.
The FDA says that it is working to determine if the onions were available to consumers through grocery stores. It said restaurants, retailers and consumers should not eat, sell, or serve the onions, or any products containing them.
The agency says that anyone who suspects they had the onions should use extra vigilance in cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces and containers that may have come in contact with the products to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. This includes cleaning and sanitizing cutting boards, slicers, countertops, refrigerators, and storage bins.
Consumers who have symptoms of salmonella infection should contact their health care provider, the recall notice says.
“Most people with salmonellosis develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.
“More severe cases of salmonellosis may include a high fever, aches, headaches, lethargy, a rash, blood in the urine or stool, and in some cases may become fatal.”
