Walmart Baby Cereal Toxic Heavy Metal Recall Overview:

  • Who: Walmart manufacturer Maple Island Inc.
  • Why: The Walmart manufacturer is recalling batches of Parent’s Choice Rice Baby Cereal due to traces of arsenic, as Walmart faces multiple class action lawsuits over the issue.
  • Where: Nationwide

Three lots of Parent’s Choice Rice Baby Cereal sold at Walmart are being recalled after the manufacturer found traces of the heavy metal arsenic in the food.

On Oct. 8, Walmart supplier Maple Island Inc. issued a recall of three lots of the baby cereal it manufactures for Walmart, as the company faces multiple class action lawsuits over the presence of toxic heavy metals in its baby food.

The recall was prompted after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did routine testing of the baby food and found samples of the baby food tested for arsenic.

The levels were above the guidance for naturally occurring inorganic arsenic.

The recall comes as Walmart faces multiple class action lawsuits alleging it manufactures, markets, and sells baby food that contains high levels of toxic heavy metals such as cadmium, mercury, arsenic and lead.

Walmart Continued to Sell Baby Foods Tainted With Toxic Heavy Metals Even After Investigative Report, Class Action Lawsuits Allege

Plaintiffs claim Walmart knows its Parent’s Choice brand baby food contains toxic heavy metals which can cause babies to suffer irreversible brain damage, but have continued to sell it anyway.

Walmart was part of a group of baby food manufacturers implicated in an investigative report released in February by the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy Committee on Oversight and Reform of the U.S. House of Representatives. Since the report was released, both Walmart and Gerber have had class action lawsuits filed against them due to the toxic heavy metals found in their baby food.

The recalled product was distributed nationally through Walmart’s stores and online. Walmart has been advised and has pulled the product from its store shelves and put a register block on the product at its stores and online to prevent any further sales.

“Customers who may have purchased Parent’s Choice Rice Baby Cereal at Walmart… should discard the product or return it to Walmart for a full refund,” the FDA recall says.

The recall says no illnesses related to the product lots have been reported to date and no other production lots or Parent’s Choice products are affected at this time.

The specific Parent’s Choice Rice Baby Cereal 8 oz lots being recalled were sold after April 5, 2021, and include:

  • Lot 21083 with UPC Code #00681131082907 with a best if used by date of JUN 24 2022.
  • Lot 21084 with UPC Code #00681131082907 with a best if used by date of JUN 25 2022
  • Lot 21242 with UPC Code #00681131082907 with a best if used by date of NOV 30 2022
