Butterball Turkey Recall Overview:

  • Who: North Carolina company Butterball, LLC, has recalled two of its ground turkey products.
  • Why: The company has recalled around 14,107 pounds of ground turkey that was sold nationwide due to possible blue plastic contamination.
  • Where: The turkey was sold nationwide.

Butterball turkey has been recalled, including more than 14,000 pounds of ground turkey products sold nationwide due to possible blue plastic contamination.

The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall on October 13, saying that the problem was discovered when FSIS and the Butterball received consumer complaints reporting pieces of blue plastic embedded in the raw ground turkey.

So far, there have been no confirmed reports of injuries due to consumption of the Butterball turkey products, FSIS says.

The recalled ground turkey was produced on September 28, 2021 and includes:

  • 2.5 lb trays containing “farm to family BUTTERBALL all natural Ground Turkey” with the case code 50211271, a sell or freeze by date of 10/18/2021, and timestamps from 2123 through 2302 printed on the packaging.
  • 3 lb tray containing “Kroger GROUND TURKEY” with the case code 50211271, a sell or freeze by date of 10/17/2021, and timestamps from 2314 through 2351 printed on the packaging.

The recalled products have establishment number “EST. P-7345” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Recalled Butterball Turkey May Be In the Freezer

FSIS says it is concerned that some of the ground turkey may be in consumers’ freezers or refrigerators and urged consumers who had purchased the products not to consume them.

“These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact the Butterball Consumer Hotline.

Raw meats can be the subject of recalls for a number of reasons. Recently, a Nebraska beef company had to recall 147.6 tons of raw beef products due to possible E.coli contamination.

Butterball turkey competitor Jennie-O was forced to recall hundreds of thousands of pounds of ground turkey products in recent years after the discovery of extensive salmonella contamination.
