Imported Onions Recall Overview:

  • Who: ProSource, Inc. and Keeler Family Farms are both recalling red, yellow, and white onions imported from Chihuahua, Mexico.
  • Why: The onions have been tied to a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Oranienburg, which has seen at least 202 people hospitalized and 652 people infected.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

If you’re not sure who imported your onions, you should throw them out, or risk a salmonella infection, according to a new recall issued by the U.S. Food & Drug Association (FDA).

In an Oct. 22 update to an ongoing, multistate outbreak of salmonella tied to red, yellow and white onions imported from the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, a second onion importer —Keeler Family Farms—announced it was voluntarily recalling onions sold nationwide.

The imported onions have been tied to a multistate salmonella outbreak, which has seen at least 202 people hospitalized and 652 people infected.

Keeler Family Farms said it was issuing the voluntary recall out of an abundance of caution, and that none of its onions had tested positive for salmonella.

The company said its onions were distributed to wholesalers, restaurants, and retail stores in all 50 states and the District of Columbia in 25lb/50lb mesh sacks with labels marked as MVP (product of MX).

It said consumers, restaurants, and retailers should not eat, sell, or serve red, white, yellow, or onions from Keeler Family Farms or products containing the onions.

“If you cannot tell if your onion is from Keeler Family Farm’s, or your food product contains such onions, you should not eat, sell, or serve it, and should throw it out,” the recall states.

Keeler Family Farms is the second United States onion importer to issue a recall of red, yellow and white onions through the FDA.

On Oct. 21, ProSource Inc announced it was recalling a range of its red, yellow, and white onions imported from Chihuahua and sold nationwide.

ProSource Inc agreed to the voluntary recall after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found the link between the outbreak and the onions imported to the United States between July 1, 2021 and August 27, 2021.

The ProSource Inc recall includes red, yellow, and white onions imported from the State of Chihuahua with import dates from July 1, 2021 through August 27, 2021. The onion types include jumbo, colossal, medium, and sweet onions.

There were 20 illness subclusters found and investigated in the current salmonella outbreak, all of which were associated with restaurants and food service locations where the onions were served raw, the FDA said in the ProSource recall notice.

State officials collected food products from some of the restaurants where sick people ate and found a sample of the disease in a takeout condiment cup containing cilantro, lime, and onion.

“The investigation is ongoing to determine the source of contamination and if additional products or firms are linked to illness.”
