More than 1,000 Creekside Children’s Chests of Drawers were recalled by manufacturer Canyon Furniture because they may tip-over, posing a serious risk of injury or death.

The recalled dressers have five drawers and come in charcoal and chestnut colors, according to the Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) notice. They measure 43.5 inches tall and 18 inches deep.

The Creekside Kids Five-Drawer Chests were made between April 2020 and March 2021 and sold exclusively at Rooms to Go for $430. A printed label on the back of the dressers reads “Canyon Furniture Co,” contains SKU number 34595035 (charcoal) or 34495045 (chestnut), and the manufacture date (“Prod. Date”), in month/day/year format (MM/DD/YY).

The CPSC warns consumers to stop using the recalled Creekside Kids Five-Drawer Chests because they do not meet voluntary industry standards regarding tip-over accidents.

“The recalled chests are unstable if they are not anchored to the wall, posing tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in death or serious injuries to children,” warns the agency.

Consumers can contact Rooms to Go for a free repair or replacement, including a free pick-up by the company.

No injuries linked to the recalled Creekside Kids Five-Drawer Chests have been reported, but the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found in 2016 that more than 30,000 Americans visited the emergency room because of furniture tip over injuries – mostly children. Indeed, around 84 percent of reported fatalities from furniture tip over injuries involved children. Children are often injured by climbing a dresser or knocking over a TV. Seniors also face significant danger from furniture tip over injuries.

The CPSC encourages consumers to anchor any furniture that may be in danger of tipping over to the wall. Unfortunately, some furniture and appliances may not be safe even when consumers have taken such precautions.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other child safety recalls.
