The popular Ameriwood dresser—sold at Walmart and a slew of other retailers for about $60—has unfortunately been linked with a high rate of tipping over, leading to some injuries. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that at least one child has been injured by a toppling Ameriwood dresser.
According to the CPSC, if left unattached to the wall, the Ameriwood dresser can be dangerous, “posing serious tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in death or injuries to children.” Because of these issues, the CPSC says, around 1.6 million Ameriwood dresser were recalled in September 2017.
Consumers with an Ameriwood dresser have been asked either to anchor it to the wall or to to stop using it, as well as keep children away from it. Ameriwood is offering free repair kits for the affected Ameriwood dresser units. These repair kits include a device to anchor the unit to the wall.
Furniture Tip-Over Hazards
More and more furniture tip over injuries are being reported, the vast majority of which involve children. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found in 2016 that more than 30,000 Americans visited the emergency room because of furniture tip over injuries. This report sparked a class action investigation into some major furniture companies, which may have failed to take proper precautions in ensuring the safety of consumers.
Those primarily at risk from these kinds of furniture tip over injuries are the most dangerous for children. Indeed, around 84 percent of reported fatalities from furniture tip over injuries involved children. Children are often injured by climbing a dresser or knocking over a TV. Seniors also face significant danger from furniture tip over injuries.
The CPSC encourages consumers to anchor any furniture that may be in danger of tipping over to the wall. Unfortunately, some furniture and appliances may not be safe even when consumers have taken such precautions. There may be additional dangers of large furniture and other household items that can be attributed dangerous manufacture and design.
The 2016 CPSC report over furniture tip over injuries found that more than 30,000 go to the emergency room each year due to furniture tip-over injuries.
The Ameriwood dresser recall is not the only one of its kind. Indeed, over the last several years, a number of dressers have been recalled due to tip-over hazards. Dresser recalls have affected units sold at Ikea, Walmart, Target, Amazon.com, Baby.com, JCPenney, and more.
Filing an Ameriwood Dresser Lawsuit
Have you purchased an Ameriwood dresser affected by the recall? If you didn’t get what you paid for (that is, a safe dresser without a heightened tip-over hazard) you may be eligible for compensation.
While anchoring furniture to the wall would help prevent these risks, some claim that the manufacturers of this furniture should take responsibility and improve their own standards in order to best protect customers.
Lawsuits allege that the manufacturers of the products involved in furniture tip over injuries should be held responsible for defects, poor manufacture and design, and inadequate safety measures. If you have purchased an Ameriwood dresser affected by the recall, you may be able to join a class action lawsuit investigation and receive compensation.
