Pier 1 storeThe United States Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that Pier 1 has recalled multiple collections of desk chairs over concerns that the chairs’ legs can break, posing a fall hazard.

The recall was instituted on Jan. 30 and affects around 6,000 units in the Untied States along with an additional 300 units sold in Canada.

The CPSC explains that five collections of upholstered swivel desk chairs are included in the Pier 1 recall. These collections include those named Brennon, Corinne, Devon, Emille, and Hourglass. All of the affected chairs have five wheels on a base. The chairs were available in various colors.

The chairs affected by the recall were manufactured between April 2019 and September 2019. The CPSC provides a complete list of model numbers of the affected chairs and notes that consumers can locate the model number on a label on the underside of the desk chair’s seat.

The recalled desk chairs were sold online at Pier 1’s website as well as in stores around the country between May 2019 and November 2019. They retailed for between $260 and $450. They were manufactured in China and were imported by Pier 1 Imports of Fort Worth, Texas.

There have been 29 reported incidents of the chairs breaking and one report of a minor back injury incurred after a chair broke. Consumers can report incidents involving the Brennon desk chairs to the CPSC on the commissions’s website.

Consumers who purchased the chairs are eligible for a free repair kit and are advised to not use the chair until they have repaired it.

To receive a repair kit, consumers can contact Pier 1 toll-free at 855-513-5140 between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays, Saturday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., and Sundays between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Central Time.

Consumers who are looking for more information about the recall can visit Pier 1’s website and click on “Product Notes & Recalls” at the bottom of the web page.

The recall number for the Pier 1 desk chair recall is 20-064. The Pier 1 desk chair recall was instituted in conjunction with Canada to best protect consumers in both countries.

The CPSC has reported recalls of other furniture products in recent month. One such recall was the Hillsdale Furniture recall of the company’s five-drawer chests. The chest of drawers reportedly could tip over and injure users. In the case of the Hillsdale dresser recall, consumers who had purchased the dressers were given a repair kit to affix the dresser to a wall.

Issues like the Pier 1 desk chair fall risk and the Hillsdale dresser tip over risk can put consumers in serious danger. Recalls provide a way to remedy the problem and, in the case of these two recalls, repair the recalled item.
