Bayside 9-piece Costco furniture setCostco’s Bayside Furnishings Lawler 9-piece dining sets were recently recalled by the manufacturer due to concerns that the chairs can break and lead to falls.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the furniture recall after manufacturer Whalen LLC received reports of 178 chairs breaking. No injuries have been reported. Any other incidents and injuries can be submitted to the CPSC through their report system.

The Costco dining sets include a large gray table measuring 92” long and able to expand to 110” with removable leaves. Each set includes eight chairs with gray fabric upholstered seats.

The Bayside Furnishings Lawler 9-piece dining sets were sold exclusively at Costco between July 2019 and December 2019, retailing for between $1,000 and $1,200. Around 8,560 units are included in this recall.

Consumers can identify the recalled Costco dining sets by the UPC number (764053530869) and model number (CSC9PD-9-R1) featured on the Bayside Furnishings label sewn underneath the chair seat.

Individuals who purchased the Costco dining sets can contact Whalen to receive a full refund of their recalled furniture. In the meantime, consumers are encouraged to stop using the recalled dining chairs.

Consumers can contact Whalen at 833-205-0936 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. PT Monday to Friday for more information. Whalen will reportedly be reaching out to known purchasers directly to facilitate a full refund.

This is not the first furniture recall of 2020, nor the first chair recall due to a fall hazard. In late January, Pier 1 recalled several collections of desk chairs due to concerns that the chairs’ legs could break and consumers could fall. Unlike the Costco dining set recall which provides a full refund, the Pier 1 recall provides a free repair kit.

Another common furniture recall is seen in dressers that pose a tip over risk. According to Consumer Reports, dressers can tip over if weight is placed on the front of the drawers. This often occurs when children climb the front of the dresser or play inside a drawer.

Unfortunately, this could have fatal consequences. Consumer Reports notes that the vast majority of tip over dresser incidents affect children under the age of six.

In order to mitigate the fatal consequences of dresser tip over incidents, many manufacturers recall the furniture pieces. In December 2019, Hillsdale Furniture recalled some of their five drawer chest dressers due to concerns that the furniture could tip over and cause an injury. The recall, like many tip over dresser recalls, provides a free repair kit that anchors the dresser to the wall. Alternatively, consumers could recover a refund of the dresser’s purchase price.

In October 2019, Kmart recalled 1 million of their Ridgewood dressers due to similar risks.
