Toyota Crown recall overview:

  • Who: Toyota recalled about 13,000 model year 2023 Toyota Crown vehicles.
  • Why: The automaker says the vehicles’ camera cases may allow water to enter, possibly creating a short circuit that could affect the image display.
  • Where: The Toyota Crown recall is active in the United States.

Toyota recalled about 13,000 model year 2023 Toyota Crown vehicles due to a camera display issue.

The automaker published a recall notice on its website June 14. It says the issue originates in the vehicles’ frontview and rearview camera cases, which can allow water to enter, potentially short circuiting the camera and causing certain images to not display.

“If the rearview image does not display, there can be an increased risk of striking and injuring a pedestrian while backing the vehicle,” the recall states.

Toyota did not say whether there have been any injuries as a result of the issue. The automaker is not facing a class action, but Top Class Actions follow recall notices closely as they can sometimes result in lawsuits.

Toyota will repair cameras at no cost

Toyota says its dealers will inspect the serial number of the affected camera and repair them at no cost to drivers, if necessary, according to the recall notice.

The company says it will notify owners of potentially affected vehicles by mid-August 2024.

Toyota’s chairman admitted earlier this month the automaker was cheating on certification tests for seven of its vehicle models, including for collision and airbag inflation tests. Chairman Akio Toyoda apologized for the massive cheating scandal and suspended production of three of them.
