  • Why: The recall is due to a defect in the left-side tailgate cable, which may fail under heavy load conditions, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Where: The Ford recall is active in the United States.

Ford is recalling more than 30,000 F-series trucks due to a potential defect in the tailgate cable that could pose an injury risk.

The Ford recall notice was issued on Oct. 20 and affects certain models, including the 2026-2027 Ford F-150, 2026 F-250 SD, F-350 SD and F-450 SD. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the left-side tailgate cable may fail when subjected to certain heavy load conditions, potentially causing the tailgate to drop onto the rear bumper.

This defect does not trigger any warning lights or electronic messages to alert drivers, as noted in the safety recall report: “There are no cluster messages, malfunction indicator lights or other electronic messaging to the customer.”

Ford to repair F-150 trucks, other vehicles at no cost

Ford has advised owners of the affected models to take their vehicles to a dealership where the left-side tailgate cable will be replaced at no cost.

Initial notification letters regarding the safety risk are scheduled to be sent out on Dec. 14, with further communication about the remedy expected in January 2027.

Ford says it has not received any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The automaker is not currently facing legal action over the Ford recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

The latest F-Series issue is not the only one reported in recent weeks. On Oct. 20, Ford recalled 102,000 pickup trucks, including certain 2026 F-150 models and 2025-26 F-250 SD, F-350 SD and F-450 SD models, due to a speedometer defect.
