Denver Broncos football player Aaron Patrick filed a lawsuit against the National Football League (NFL), the Los Angeles Chargers and ESPN, among others, after the outside linebacker suffered a torn ACL during a game last month.
Patrick suffered the season-ending injury after colliding with an NFL employee and stepping on sideline mats while playing in a Monday Night Football game at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Oct. 17, Sports Illustrated reports.
The special teams player reportedly accuses SoFi Stadium and the Chargers, among others, of premises liability and negligence, while also accusing, among others, the NFL, ESPN and the NFL employee he collided with of negligence.
The negligence is due to “knowingly running electrical cords/cables across the sideline and/or knowingly placing three mats atop the electrical cords/cables on the sidelines to cover the cords/cables,” according to the Broncos lawsuit.
Patrick tore ACL after stepping on mats placed on sideline, Broncos lawsuit claims
Patrick tore his ACL after he tried to avoid colliding with the NFL employee following a tackle attempt. He landed awkwardly after stepping on mats placed on the sideline to cover cables connected to a replay monitor.
“Upon information and belief, the mats were placed in their location by defendant ESPN, INC., who was broadcasting the MNF game on national television for the NFL,” the Broncos lawsuit states.
Patrick demands a jury trial and requests all past, present and future economic and non-economic damages available under California law, including pain and suffering damages, among other things.
The District of Columbia filed a separate class action lawsuit involving the NFL over claims the Washington Commanders made misleading statements to the public following reports of a hostile workplace environment, including sexual misconduct.
