NFL Washington Commanders toxic workplace lawsuit overview:

  • Who: The District of Columbia filed a lawsuit against the Washington Commanders, its Owner Daniel Snyder, the National Football League and its Commissioner Roger Goodell.
  • Why: D.C. claims the Commanders made misleading statements to the public following reports of sexual misconduct and a hostile work environment within its organization to ensure they didn’t lose fan support.
  • Where: The lawsuit was filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

The National Football League (NFL)’s Washington Commanders and Owner Daniel Snyder deceived District of Columbia consumers about misconduct happening within the organization, a new lawsuit alleges.

The District of Columbia claims the Commanders and Snyder repeatedly attempted to bolster confidence and loyalty to the organization “through artful deception” that was to consumers’ detriment.

D.C. argues the Commanders made misleading statements to “sell expensive tickets and merchandise” following widespread allegations of “sexual misconduct and a persistently hostile work environment.”

“Defendants made a series of public statements to convince District consumers that this dysfunctional and misogynistic conduct was limited and that they were fully cooperating with an independent investigation,” the NFL lawsuit states.

Commanders lawsuit claims team made misleading statements so fans would continue financially supporting team

D.C. claims statements made by the team were “false and miscalculated” to “mislead consumers so they would continue to support the team financially without thinking that they were supporting such misconduct.”

The alleged misleading statements came after reports came out in summer 2020 of “decades of sexual harassment, verbal abuse and pervasive toxicity” within the organization, which “threatened the Team’s image and generated consumer outrage,” according to the Commanders lawsuit.

“The Team knew its fans would not continue to financially support businesses that knowingly tolerated this misconduct,” the lawsuit states.

D.C. claims the Commanders, Snyder, the NFL and Goodell violated the Consumer Protection Procedures Act

The AG demands a jury trial and requests injunctive and declaratory relief along with an award of disgorgement, restitution, and damages.

In related Commanders news, in April, the congressional Committee on Oversight and Reform urged the Federal Trade Commission to investigate crimes potentially committed by the Washington Commanders.
