Publix recall overview:

  • Who: Publix is recalling all lots of GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries.
  • Why: The frozen berries may be contaminated with E. coli O145:H28, a Shiga toxin-producing strain that can cause severe illness.
  • Where: The recall affects Publix stores across eight Southeastern states.

Publix is recalling all lots of its GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries due to possible contamination with Escherichia coli O145:H28.

The recalled items include 10-ounce and 48-ounce GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries (UPC 41415-06453 and 41415-12053) and 10-ounce and 48-ounce GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries (UPC 41415-06753 and 41415-12153).

The recall, announced on July 30, affects frozen blueberries and mixed berries shipped to Publix stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

The Publix recall follows an earlier recall on July 3 by supplier Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. of San Carlos, Chile, of a single lot of GreenWise Organic Blueberries (10-ounce, lot code 60401).

After public health officials completed product traceback and epidemiological review, Publix expanded the recall to cover all lots of both berry products as a precaution.

Publix conducted an internal stop-sale of the products at the end of June, and they remain unavailable for purchase.

E. coli O145 is a Shiga toxin-producing strain that can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea that may be bloody, and vomiting. In some cases, particularly among young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems, the infection can lead to a serious complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Consumers urged not to eat recalled berries; 4 people hospitalized

According to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published on July 30, there have been 12 confirmed infections with four people hospitalized in two states.

Consumers who purchased any of the recalled GreenWise frozen blueberries or mixed berries should not eat them. Publix is advising shoppers to either discard the products or return them to any Publix store for a full refund, no receipt required for the return.

For questions about the Publix recall, consumers can call the company’s care line at (800) 242-1227, available 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration notice also points consumers to the CDC’s ongoing outbreak investigation page for updates on the broader E. coli cluster linked to frozen blueberries.

The CDC reports 12 cases of infection with four people hospitalized so far. Greenwise and Publix are currently not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

In July, consumers filed a class action lawsuit against Taylor Farms, alleging it sold Cyclospora-contaminated lettuce and leafy greens without warning consumers.
