GM recall overview:

  • Who: GM issued a recall for nearly 450,000 of its Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Sierra, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac Escalade ESV vehicles.
  • Why: The recall was initiated over concerns the vehicles could fail to display a warning light in the event a loss of brake fluid occurs.
  • Where: The recall affects certain GM vehicle owners nationwide.

GM is recalling nearly 450,000 of its vehicles over concerns their electronic brake control software could fail to display a warning light.

The recall involves certain model year 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles and model year 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac Escalade ESV vehicles.

GM said the warning light may fail to display in the recalled vehicles in the event a loss of brake fluid occurs, both increasing the risk of a crash and preventing the vehicles from complying with federal motor vehicle safety standards.

“Without a warning light, the vehicle may be driven with low brake fluid, which can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash,” the GM recall says

GM to update electronic brake control module software in recalled vehicles

GM plans to remedy the recall issue by updating the software in the vehicles’ electronic brake control module to “correct the condition” either in-person at a GM dealer or via an over-the-air update, if possible, according to the GM recall.

The automaker said it estimates it will begin sending recall notification letters to affected vehicle owners Oct. 28, 2024.

Vehicle owners with more questions about the recall can contact GMC, Chevrolet or Cadillac by phone at 1-800-462-8782, 1-800-222-1020 and 1-800-458-8006, respectively.

GM issued a separate recall last month for more than 20,000 model year 2023-2024 Cadillac LYRIQ vehicles equipped with all-wheel drive over concerns they may contain defective antilock braking systems that may cause a loss of braking ability under certain conditions.
