USDA Health Ground Beef Organic Rancher Plastic Health Alert Overview:

  • Who: The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for certain Good Rancher brand raw ground beef products.
  • Why: There are concerns the ground beef may contain hard plastic.
  • Where: The health alert is effective in the United States.

United States food safety watchdogs have issued a public health alert for certain raw ground beef products sold at Whole Foods nationwide after consumers complained of finding hard plastic in the beef products.

U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued the alert for various Organic Rancher brand ground beef products on its website May 11.

The recalled products include 16-oz. vacuum-sealed packages containing “ORGANIC RANCHER ORGANIC GROUND BEEF 93% LEAN 7% FAT” with a use-by date of 5-18-2022 and 16-oz. vacuum-sealed packages containing “ORGANIC RANCHER ORGANIC GROUND BEEF 85% LEAN 15% FAT” with a use-by date of 5-18-2022.

There is no recall because the products are no longer available for purchase, the notice states. The ground beef products were produced on April 20, 2022, and shipped to Whole Foods locations nationwide.

Whole Foods Consumers Complain About Hard, Rigid Plastic in Ground Beef

The problem was discovered after the manufacturer received complaints from consumers reporting they found hard, rigid plastic in the ground beef products. It then notified FSIS of the issue.

There have been no confirmed reports of illness or adverse reactions due to consumption of the products so far, the notice says. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the notice, but Top Class Actions follows these notices closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

FSIS is concerned that the products may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers, it said.

“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them,” the health alert says. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

The news comes after another public health alert was issued last month for certain ground beef products as the products may be contaminated with E. coli O26.
