Van Leeuwen Ice Cream is voluntarily recalling 2,185 14 oz. pints of its non-dairy frozen dessert “Oat Milk Brown Sugar Chunk” because it may contain traces of undeclared tree nuts.
The company published a recall notice May 10 on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website, saying the products may contain traces of cashews and pistachios.
The recall was initiated after a customer had a reaction and complained to the company.
“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to specific types of allergens… run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the recall notice says.
The cause of the contamination is being investigated, the Van Leeuwen ice cream recall states.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Products Distributed Nationwide
The recalled products were distributed nationally in retail stores.
The product comes in a 14 oz. white package with orange lettering and an orange lid. It is marked with lot #21V194 and a best-by date of 1/13/2023, which are both displayed on the bottom of the pint.
The recall does not apply to any other lot marking, best-by date or variety of Van Leeuwen products.
Retailers who have the product are urged to stop sales and distribution immediately, contain and isolate the lot and contact Van Leeuwen immediately for verification and disposal instructions.
“Consumers who have purchased the impacted lot should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund,” the recall notice says.
In related news, Turkey Hill Dairy recalled tubs of chocolate marshmallow ice cream as they may have been accidentally filled with peanut butter ice cream, which could be life-threatening to those with peanut allergies.
