  • Why: The collective concerns for the named chicken products include undeclared allergens, undercooking and lack of import reinspection.
  • Where: The recalls affect consumers nationwide.

Wayne Farms and Safeway Fresh Foods recently issued recalls for ready-to-eat chicken products while the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for two Trader Joe’s ready-to-eat frozen chicken products.

Wayne Farms recalled around 30,000 pounds of its ready-to-eat chicken breast filet over concerns the product may have been undercooked, according to a recall announced by the FSIS on April 29.

The recalled Wayne Farms products include its “ALL NATURAL FIRE GRILLED CHICKEN BREAST” with use-by dates of May 30, 2022, and June 19, 2022.

The FSIS says the products were delivered in 9-lb. cases containing either eight packages of 6-oz. product or 12 packages of 4-oz. product.

There have been no reports of adverse health effects connected to the recall, according to the FSIS.

The FSIS is advising restaurants not to serve the recalled Wayne Farms products and to either throw them away or return them to their place of purchase.

Safeway Recalls Ready-To-Eat Chicken Caesar Salad Products

Safeway Fresh Foods, meanwhile, has recalled approximately 717 lbs. of its ready-to-eat Chicken Caesar Salad products on account of misbranding and undeclared allergens, according to a recall announced by the FSIS on May 3.

The FSIS says the recalled Chicken Caesar Salad products contain undeclared known allergens egg, wheat and anchovies.

The recalled product is Safeway’s “Dole FRESH Takes CLASSIC CHICKEN CAESAR SALAD” and was shipped in a 13.6-oz. plastic bowl with a use-by date of May 5, 2022.

The FSIS says the affected products were distributed to retailers in Virginia, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware.

There have been no reports of adverse health effects due to the consumption of the recalled products, according to the recall notice.

Trader Joe’s RTE Chicken Receives FSIS Public Health Alert

Both the Safeway and Wayne Farms recalls followed a public health alert issued by the FSIS on April 28 over two Trader Joe’s ready-to-eat frozen chicken products it says did not “receive the benefit of import reinspection.”

The Trader Joe’s products were not recalled because they are no longer available for purchase, according to the FSIS public health alert

The frozen chicken products in question are “TRADER JOES BUTTER CHICKEN WITH BASMATI RICE” with best-buy dates of April 14, 2023, and April 16, 2023, and “TRADER JOES MINI CHICKEN TIKKA SAMOSAS” with a best-buy date of April 14, 2023, according to the public health alert.

The FSIS says it is concerned that the product, while no longer being sold, could still be in consumers’ freezers and is advising they not be consumed and instead thrown out or returned to their original place of purchase.

Trader Joe’s issued a recall in March for its Crunchy Slaw with Chicken, Crispy Noodles & Peanut Dressing over concerns it was contaminated with hard pieces of plastic
