Ground Beef E. Coli USDA Recall Overview:

  • Who: The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for certain ground beef products.
  • Why: The FSIS has concerns that the products may be contaminated with E. coli O26.
  • Where: The products were distributed to warehouses in Oregon and Washington and sold at retail locations.

A public health alert has been issued for certain ground beef products as the products may be contaminated with E. coli O26.

In a notice posted April 27 to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) website, the department said certain ground beef items produced on Dec. 16 and 17, 2021, could be contaminated.

The impacted brands include All Natural Laura’s, Kroger and Private Selection. The full list of recalled products can be seen here.

The FSIS said a recall was not being issued because the products are no longer available for purchase; however, it is concerned that some products may be in consumers’ freezers.

“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them,” the recall notice says. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

The ground beef products were distributed to warehouses in Oregon and Washington and sold at retail locations.

E. Coli Discovered By Ill Ground Beef Consumer

The problem was discovered after a consumer submitted a retail package of ground beef produced by Empire Packing bearing a use or freeze by date of “Dec. 24, 2021” to a third-party laboratory for microbiological analysis.

The consumer reported previously becoming ill but did not get tested for E coli. The third-party laboratory confirmed the ground beef sample was positive for E. coli O26.

“Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider,” the recall states.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Most people infected with STEC O26 develop diarrhea and vomiting. Many recover within a week, but, rarely, some develop a more severe infection.

The FSIS also said it advises all consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products and only consume ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160 degrees.

“The only way to confirm that ground beef is cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer that measures internal temperature,” the ground beef recall notice says.

The news comes as more than 60 tons of ground beef is being recalled nationwide as it may be contaminated with  E. coli, according to federal safety regulators.

Lakeside Refrigerated Services announced it was recalling approximately 120,872 pounds of ground beef in a notice posted to the FSIS website Apr. 25.
