Ford, Hyundai, Tony Hawk, Target, Starbucks recalls overview:

  • Who: Ford, Hyundai, Tony Hawk, Target and Starbucks all faced recalls for their respective products this week.
  • Why: These top recalls revolve around product safety and possible risk of harm.
  • Where: Each recall is effective nationwide.

A number of popular companies, retailers and manufacturers announced top recalls this week for products that may pose potential injury to consumers.

Ford issues recall for Maverick, Escape, Corsair hybrid vehicles

At the front of the list of top recalls last week was Ford, who issued a recall on July 8 for more than 100,000 U.S. hybrid vehicles over fire risks. In the event of an engine failure, a significant amount of engine oil and fuel vapor may be released that can build up near ignition sources and potentially cause an under-hood fire.

The recall covers certain 2020-2022 model year Ford Escape, Maverick and Lincoln Corsair models with 2.5-liter hybrid/plug-in hybrid engines.

No injuries or accidents have been reported so far, but consumers are encouraged to take their vehicles to a dealer for the under engine shield and active grille shutter to be modified to address safety concerns.

Hyundai recalls Ioniq vehicles for a second time

Hyundai recalled more than 10,500 of its previously recalled model year 2017 and 2018 Hyundai Ioniq HEV and PHV vehicles after determining that they may not have received the proper modifications to fix issues with their power assemblies.

The previous recall addressed an issue with the fit condition of an electrical pin on the main relays within the power relay assemblies. Continually operating with the improper fit condition can lead to heat and risk of the rear seats catching fire.

Hyundai will notify all owners of affected vehicles with instructions on how they can bring their vehicles to an authorized dealer for remedy at no cost.

Tony Hawk helmets sold at Walmart recalled

On July 14, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) posted a recall notice for 12,655 Sakar Tony Hawk silver helmets that do not comply with the positional stability and retention system requirements of the CPSC federal safety standard for bicycle helmets. The helmets can fail to protect the head in an event of a crash, posing a risk of injury.

The helmets with item number AGE2515STH-SIL were sold in Walmart stores nationwide and online from March 2022 through June 2022. The recall follows another recent helmet recall from the company. In March, Sakar International recalled 89,000 of its Dimensions Bluetooth Speaker Helmets in the United States and 272 in Canada for a similar head injury risk; the Tony Hawk silver helmets were provided to consumers as replacements.

Consumers should immediately stop using the helmets and contact Sakar International for instructions on receiving a refund in the form of a $40 Walmart gift card.

Lavender Shortbread Cookies sold at Target recalled

On July 5, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration posted a recall notice for 1,464 packs of J&M Foods Favorite Day brand lavender shortbread cookies sold at Target.

The product was “erroneously packed” with chocolate chip cookies instead. Since the packs are filled with the wrong cookies, the packaging does not list the presence of soy and eggs, which can cause serious allergic reactions to consumers.

There have not been any illnesses reported so far, and consumers who purchased the product are encouraged to contact Target at 1-800-440-0680 or J&M Foods at 1-800-264-2278 for a full refund.

Starbucks removes new chicken sandwich off menu

Starbucks released its new Chicken, Maple Butter and Egg Sandwich on June 21 and reportedly removed it from menus only six days later.

Hundreds of customers took to social media to share their symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain after eating the sandwich. Starbucks has acknowledged that the sandwich “did not meet Starbucks’ quality standards” and a separate spokesperson told the New York Post that the sandwich was not related to listeria or salmonella.

I would like to start a class action suit against Ford Motor Company for defective transmission because I own a 2013 Ford Focus with a defective transmission and unable to find another one. My car has been at a Ford dealership here in Mississippi going on two years. I either want another car or refund for a new transmission.
