Hyundai Ioniq fire risk recall overview:

  • Who: Hyundai recalled more than 10,500 of its previously recalled model year 2017-2018 Hyundai Ioniq HEV and PHV vehicles.
  • Why: Hyundai initiated the recall after discovering that the Ioniq vehicles may not have received the proper remedy components during a previous recall meant to address an issue with their power relay assemblies that can cause their rear seats to overheat and catch fire.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

Hyundai Motor America recalled more than 10,500 of its previously recalled model year 2017 and 2018 Hyundai Ioniq HEV and PHV vehicles over concerns their rear seats can overheat and catch on fire.

Hyundai issued the recall after discovering the Ioniq vehicles may not have received the proper remedy components from a prior recall meant to fix an issue with their power relay assemblies, according to a safety recall report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The previous recall of the 2017 and 2018 Hyundai Ioniq HEV and PHV vehicles addressed an issue with the fit condition of an electrical pin on the main relays within their power relay assemblies.

When “continually operated” with the improper fit condition, Hyundai says the issue can “increase electrical resistance thereby generating heat and increasing the risk of a fire.”

“Increased electrical resistance between the main relay contacts can increase the risk of a thermal event, including the potential for a fire,” the Hyundai recall states.

Hyundai recall says loose connection can lead to overheating, fire

Hyundai says the issue causes a loose connection between the power relay assemblies main relay contacts.

Ioniq owners can tell if the issue is present if their HEV warning lights turn on while the vehicle is driving and/or if they cannot start the vehicle, according to the recall.

Hyundai says it will notify all owners of affected Hyundai Ioniq HEV and PHVs by first-class mail with instructions on how they can — at no cost — bring their vehicles to an authorized dealer to have “the previously applied remedy inspected.”

Affected vehicle owners will also be provided with reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses “incurred to obtain a remedy for the recall condition,” according to the Hyundai recall.

A consumer filed a separate class action lawsuit over the Hyundai Ioniq in June of last year, claiming the company refused to remedy an alleged battery system defect affecting its 2019 and 2020 Hyundai Kona Electric and 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Electric vehicles.
