Ford recalls Maverick, Escape, Corsair hybrid vehicles due to fire risk

Ford recall hybrid vehicles overview:

Ford has issued a new recall for more than 100,000 U.S. hybrid vehicles over fire risks and expanded an earlier recall after a series of under-hood fires.

The recall, announced July 8, covers certain 2020-2022 model year Ford Escape, Maverick and Lincoln Corsair vehicles with 2.5-liter hybrid/plug-in hybrid engines, Reuters reports. 

Ford said in the event of engine failure, a significant amount of engine oil and fuel vapor may be released that could accumulate near ignition sources and potentially cause an under-hood fire.

Dealers will modify the under engine shield and active grille shutter to address safety concerns. There are no accidents or injuries associated with the recalled vehicle so far, the company said, and customers do not need to park the hybrid vehicles outside as with other recalls. 

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Ford recall for Expedition, Navigator fire risk expanded

Meanwhile, Ford is separately expanding its recall of 2021 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs for under-hood fire risks by another 27,000 vehicles after five additional fires were reported, bringing the total to 21 fires.

In May, Ford recalled 39,000 2021 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs after a spate of under-hood fires in the vehicles that have already injured one person. A July 9 update from Ford now expands this pool to 66,221 cars built between July 27, 2020, and Aug. 31, 2021.

The automaker still advises customers to park those vehicles outside and away from structures until repairs are completed.

“Ford believes the cause of these vehicle fires can be traced to a change in manufacturing location by a supplier during the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Ford recall states. “Printed circuit boards produced at this facility are uniquely susceptible to a high-current short and were supplied to Ford and installed in Expedition and Navigator SUVs produced during the recall window.” 

Ford said parts for the repair are expected to be available starting in early September. Customers will be notified via FordPass.

Earlier this month, Ford recalled more than 63,000 Broncos and Rangers.
