Tesla self-driving recall overview:

  • Who: Tesla agreed to recall nearly 363,000 of its Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y vehicles equipped with the Autosteer on City Streets self-driving feature.
  • Why: The company initiated the recall over concerns the vehicles’ self-driving feature could “potentially infringe upon local traffic laws or customs.”
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

Tesla agreed to recall nearly 363,000 of its Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y vehicles due to concerns over how their self-driving features work in intersections and when traveling through yellow lights.

The recall is for certain of Tesla’s model year 2016-2023 Model S and Model X vehicles, 2017-2023 Model 3 vehicles and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles equipped with the self-driving Autosteer on City Streets feature (Full Self-Driving Beta or FSD Beta).

Tesla says “in certain rare circumstances” and “within the operating limitations of FSD Beta,” the feature could “potentially infringe upon local traffic laws or customs while executing certain driving maneuvers” when engaged

The recalled vehicles’ FSD Beta feature could pose an issue if it turns through an intersection with a stale yellow traffic light or when negotiating a lane change out of certain turn-only lanes, according to the Tesla recall.

Drivers still responsible for monitoring and maintaining safety when self-driving feature engaged, Tesla says

In its recall, Tesla described FSD Beta as a driver-support feature “that can provide steering and braking/acceleration support to the driver under certain operating limitations” while reminding that it was still up to the driver to monitor and maintain safety.

“The driver is responsible for operation of the vehicle whenever the feature is engaged and must constantly supervise the feature and intervene … as needed to maintain safe operation of the vehicle,” the Tesla recall states.

The company will deploy an over-the-air software update at no cost to vehicle owners to remedy the issue and “improve how FSD Beta negotiates certain driving maneuvers during the conditions described above,” it says.

The over-the-air software update is expected to be deployed in the coming weeks, according to the Tesla self-driving recall.

In related Tesla news, a consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Tesla in December, arguing the company sold model year 2014-2016 Model S vehicles equipped with defective door handles that presented a safety risk.
