- Where: The Honda warning affects vehicles nationwide.
Honda issued a “Do Not Drive” warning for certain model year 2001-2003 Honda and Acura vehicles equipped with defective Takata Alpha driver-side airbag inflators that have not been repaired.
The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises owners of the affected Honda and Acura vehicles with an open Takata airbag recall to stop driving them until the recall is complete.
The replacement parts needed to complete the Honda airbag recall process, which the NHTSA now calls “dire” due to the vehicles’ ages, are available for free for affected vehicle owners, according to the NHTSA.
“If you have a vehicle with a recalled Takata Alpha air bag, you must get it repaired now — for free. These inflators are two decades old now, and they pose a 50% chance of rupturing in even a minor crash,” says NHTSA Acting Administrator Ann Carlson.
NHTSA advises Honda, Acura drivers to schedule free repair as soon as possible
The NHTSA urges vehicle owners to immediately check if their Honda or Acura vehicle has an open Takata airbag recall and contact their dealership as soon as possible in the event that it does.
In addition to free replacement parts, vehicle owners will be eligible for free towing or mobile repair in addition to free loaner or rental vehicles, if needed, according to the NHTSA Honda warning.
“Don’t gamble with your life or the life of someone you love — schedule your free repair today before it’s too late,” Carlson says.
In other Honda news, a consumer filed a class action lawsuit against the automaker earlier this month, arguing it sold certain Honda and Acura vehicles with an engine defect that can cause them to become inoperable.
